Tennessee State Legislative Election 2012 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
No b) Should abortions be illegal after the first trimester of pregnancy?
Yes c) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
Yes d) Should abortion be legal when the life of the woman is endangered?
Yes e) Do you support requiring parental notification before an abortion is performed on a minor?
No f) Do you support requiring parental consent before an abortion is performed on a minor?
No g) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for abortion procedures?
No h) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
The abortion issue is one that involves a lot of deep, core moral beliefs. I don't believe one legislates moral issues. I abhor abortion but I recognize there are medical and emotional reasons why it exists. Victims of rape or incest, medical emergencies - child and mother. And I am against blanket laws that pretend every situation is the same. In addition, unless the laws are changed by the US Congress, abortion is legal under very precise regulations. As to organizations - many of these groups do more than perform abortions. We can't punish them for performing a legal function.

No e) Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees
No f) Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients
I'm listing state employees as 'No' votes, but the reality is there is always waste in government structure and I believe we should institute a policy review of bloated government at least every 10 years, eliminating positions and making government work lean and efficient. Ideally, each administration should start clean with a top-to-bottom review of functions of government to reduce waste and fraud.

a) Do you support limits on the following types of contributions for state candidates?

Yes 1) Individual
No 2) Political Action Committee
No 3) Corporate

Yes c) Do you support requiring full and timely disclosure of campaign finance information?
Yes d) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
No e) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
I do support proof of ID; however, there are many different types of ID than a state-issued photo ID that have served us well over the years. While I'm sure there is some voter fraud, this is essentially a false issue designed to impede the voting process. I can't support efforts to keep people from exercising their constitutional rights.

Yes b) Do you support alternatives to incarceration for certain non-violent offenders, such as mandatory counseling or substance abuse treatment?

As for the question of minors - again, blanket laws should never be considered. Each is case-by-case, as it has been for many years. As to immigration, of course they should enforce the laws. No one is suggesting otherwise.

Yes c) Should citizens be allowed to carry concealed guns?
Yes d) Should a license be required for gun possession?
I do not believe military weapons have a place in the home. And I believe tighter gun laws would not hinder the people who are solid citizens but might keep barrels of guns out of the hands of domestic and international terrorists operating here. We restrict via common sense the right of free speech; common sense should dictate gun rights as well.
Yes a) Do you support a universally-accessible, publicly-administered health insurance option?
